Most teams have presenters working on their own slides, writing their own scripts, then trying to integrate at the end. The main source of friction is between myself and a presenter; we each have strong, clear ideas of what an effective presentation should be like. So instead, I have Eric (our SolidWorks professional) generate high-DPI images of each individual part each bevel gear, each motor, each aluminum plate. I remove the backgrounds on the images and painstakingly stitch them together in Keynote, until they match the correct part positions in SolidWorks. Then, using Keynotes Magic Move feature, I explode each part to a subsequent slide. It takes an insane amount of time relative to the effort it takes to generate a quick SolidWorks animation. But to me, its not about doing whats fast, its about doing whats right. The whole team spent hours and hours designing and fabricating our product, and Im not about to present it in a shoddy way in front of 3300 people. The problem seems to be that were running off just the controller on our PCB, which has no power regulator; when the opening motor operates were seeing a current drop again. The quick hack is to add a complete Arduino, which has a power regulator, in series before our board is connected to power. Successful and Sad Life of Sir Isaac Newton - Free Essay Example

Sir Isaac Newton led a successful but sad life. He accomplished many educational practices but never really succeed in the family life. His mother left him at an early age which left an emotional mark on him that effected his later years. Growing up his family helped him through school, where he eventually graduated and went on to college. Although having no father figure he still matured into a bright young man. During his early life he did not connect with other children, and did not have any significant relationships. Isaacss main focus was his studies and education which really affected his relationships. But his early life, education, accomplishments, faith and eventually death all positively affected him in his life. Newton influenced Americas mathematic history that set the nation up for success. (132) Newtons father, also named Isaac Newton, died three months before he was born, which left his mother to raise him on her own. He was also a premature child and was not expected to live. Isaac was born on January 4, 1643 in Woolsthrope Lancashire, England. His mother, Hannah, left him to marry a reverend named Barnabus Smith. Leaving Newton in the hands of his grandmother, she continued to raise him until his mother returned. At the age of 12 his mother returned with three children after her husband had died. She pulled him from school to work as a farmer just like his father did. But that did not last long so his uncle helped pay for him to return to school. (123) Isaac finished his basic studies at school, but was now ready to advance to college. His Uncle encouraged him to enroll in The University of Cambridge Trinity College. Newton waited tables and took care of the wealthy students bedrooms in order to afford his tuition fees. After some time he was able to secure a room with a local student who introduced him to chemistry. In 1667 he was elected a minor fellow at Trinity College. From there he began to construct his first ever reflecting telescope in 1668. He then went on to receive a Masters of Art degree in 1669 before turning the age of 27. Soon after, he took over as Cambridges Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, and while working, discovered a new concept of nature. Graduated with honors, this won him the title of scholar, with four years of financial support. 1671 he was asked to give a demonstration of the telescope to the Royal Society and was elected to it the following year. His teaching in standard curriculum at Cambridge ended after three years. Two of Newtons many discoveries were the Three Laws of Motion and the Reflecting Telescope in which he began to develop while at Cambridge. (200) Along with Newtons discoveries at Cambridge he also discovered many things after leaving. He created calculus; with this advancement in mathematics he was able to formulate many other inventions. Beside that he created the well known Three Laws of Motion which laid a foundation for classical mechanics. Newton was also the second scientist to be knighted. Isaac invented the first reflecting telescope in 1668 which helped engineer space research. What are unknown are his inventions that failed, he may have discovered many things but gave up because it failed. His sharp mind and knowledge allowed him to focus and work by himself, he spent years developing and fine tuning each invention. (111) Understandably his faith is not talked about much, as many scientist back then did not believe in God. He took interest in the subject but never pursued it. His interest brought him to the studies of Daniel and St. John, he spent much time reading and studying the chapters. Today there are books he wrote on the studies relating to ancient chronology. With his studies he proved the Trinitarian passage with latter-day corruption. Newton went on to discover the Hooks Theory. One thing Newton is known for is writing over 1.3 million words on the biblical subject. Although research cannot say for sure whether Newton was a believer, but it does show he was not against it. (116) Although Newton had a successful life he did not succeed in the relationship part. He never had any friends, never married nor had any kids. His life was greatly impacted when his mother left him at an early age. In his later years he dealt with many health problems. By 80 years old he experienced digestion issues which caused him mobility issues. Newton spent his final years living in Cranbury Park with his niece and nephew. Isaac became one of the most famous men in Europe, but sadly was never really recognized until after his death. March 1727 he experienced abdominal pain in which he blacked out from. Several days later, after never regaining consciousness Sir Isaac Newton died March 31, 1727 at the age of 84. (124) Undoubtedly, Newton influenced Americas mathematic history that set the nation up for success. His early life, education, accomplishments, faith and eventually death all positively affected him in his life. Even though his life was depressing he succeeded well academically. Newtons advancements in science and in mathematics greatly impacted todays education. Although he was never appreciated or rewarded when he was alive, he is recognized today. Again research cannot say much for his faith, we only hope he found his way and is living in paradise now. Our nations education and discoveries would have never been possible without the hard work of Sir Isaac Newton. (104)

I decided to buy my new baby boy cousin a pink onesie and a dollhouse. When my cousin pulled the gifts out of the bag everyone had puzzled looks on their face. My cousin even asked me if I had given her the wrong gift. Everyone thought I was crazy for buying a baby boy what is deemed as girl things by society. In the world, we live in pink and dolls are for girls and blue and cars are for boys. If you buy your child anything that society deems for the other sex you break many gender norms. Women in our society are breaking away from the boundaries set from the past generations. Women are now taking and seeking roles that were once considered only for men. Just like in our society, women are trying to advance in the military. Advancing in the military, not only has to be being able to fight in combat, but also reaching some of the highest military rankings. The leap for women being able to fight in combat came this past January, when the United State’s Department of Defense, uplifted the ban on women being able to fight in combat. A woman representing her country by joining the military is something that not only takes great sacrifice, but courage as well, and they deserve the utmost respect. If a woman is willing to risk her life for the sake of her country, just like the men, should be allowed to partake in combat. War is much physical as it is mental. Opponents argue that women are physically not capable to succeed out in the battlefield. If a soldier is not physically capable to perform, they could possibly endanger themselves or their fellow soldiers. Soldiers out on the battle field carry various items like electronic equipment, weapons, ammunition, heavy body armor, and enough water, weighing anywhere between fifty to hundred pounds. There is no denying that women on average do have forty to fifty percent less upper-body strength compared to men, but it is not one hundred percent certain that certain women are not fully capable. The statistic that women are a lot weaker in their upperbody comes up a lot, but it is stretched from the truth. The physical fitness argument, which tends to focus on differences between average male and female bodies, is also undermined by the fact that women who join the military tend to be more fit than the average American. Additional training and conditioning further decrease the gap between female and male service members, and evidence indicates that women usually benefit substantia lly from fitness-training programs. † (Mackenzie, 1) To join the military there is this mental and physical toughness that one has to have or has to overcome by the time that they are about to be deployed. Yes, there is some women that are not physically capable to perform in the military, but at the same time, there are many men as well. Needless to say, there is a certain kind of person that is needed when joining the military. This goes beyond male and female. Character has a lot more to do with the success of an individual than the sex does. Regardless of this, the opposition still argues that women are still not physically capable and this could seriously put people in jeopardy. Here in the United States, opponents of allowing women fight in combat, strongly believe that women are not physically capable, but in other Countries this has been disproven. â€Å"In the 1970s, the Canadian military conducted trials that tested women’s physical, psychological, and social capacity for combat roles. The results informed the final decision of the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal to remove Canada’s female combat exclusion. After similar tests, Denmark also lifted its combat ban in the late 1980s. (Mackenzie, 1) If other countries have dismantled this theory that women are not physically capable, why has the United State’s not followed? Qualifications for being able to fight on the battle field should be tested on whether or not the individual is physically and mentally fit, the sex of the individual should not be the determining factor for why they cannot be out in combat. The United States has had a rich history of patriotism. Citizens, for the mos t part, are proud of the nation that they live in. When one looks outside for the fourth of July, all one sees is red, white and blue. A lot of Americans have a great sense of pride in the nation that they live in. Most Americans have a sense of recognition for the sacrifices that some people have made in order to make this a very prosperous country. Among those that Americans feel that deserve the recognition are ones that serve in the military. There is the upmost respect and pride that comes along when an American sees a soldier that is fighting for their country. According to Pew Research Center for the People and Press, â€Å"Two-thirds (66%) support allowing women in the military to serve in ground units that engage in close combat, while just 26% are opposed. The fifteen percent of women that make up the military have chosen to overlook these negativities and have chosen to join the military regardless. These women are aware of the risks and dangerous and still have chosen to join the military. The courage, dedication and willingness of women in the military alone, should be the reason for why they should be allowed to fight in combat. The debate on women fighting in combat has a similar history to the debate on the policy â€Å"Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. † In 1950, President Truman signed the Uniform Code of Military Justice. This policy sets up discharge rules for homosexual members or anyone seen acting out in homosexual ways (Cristina Rivero, 1). This was the beginning of disallowing openly gays from joining the military. During Ronald Reagan’s presidency, it was made clear from his staff that â€Å" Homosexuality is incompatible with military service. Those that were believed to act in homosexual ways or were gay were discharged because of the fear that homosexuals would disrupt the order of the military. According to the supporters of this ban, the disruption was going to be so great, that the military as a whole was in jeopardy. Many people felt, that this â€Å"would create an unacceptable risk to the high standards of morale, good order and discipline, and unit cohesion that are th e essence of military capability. † (Wiki, 1) In essence, military officials were scared that soldiers would end up betraying or not performing to their peak if there were an openly gay member in their unit. This would all change In 1993 when President Clinton, ordered that a bill be passed that military members would not be asked their sexual orientation. This would become to be known as â€Å"Don’t Ask, Don’t tell. † In simple terms, if one was gay and was in the military, one could not openly express themselves as being gay. This stirred a lot of controversy because people believed that one should be able to express their sexual orientation without repo caution or fear of being discriminated against. Even though in 2003, President Clinton would want the â€Å"Don’t ask, don’t tell† policy removed, it would not come about until years later. In 2011, don’t ask, don’t tell would come to an end. As the end of don’t ask, don’t tell came, a lot of military officials came out. Several high ranking military officials decided it was the appropriate time to finally come out. For years, the fear that openly gay members would be detrimental to the military kept many military men and women from being open about their sexuality. There was such a great fear when in reality there was minimal or even no consequences from openly gay members serving in the military. This is much like the debate on women fighting in combat today. Women have been serving in the military for decades. Hundreds of women have been hurt and even killed while proudly serving their country. With the proper training, any military member should be able to perform at their peak. If someone is not physically, mentally ready to be out on the battlefield, one should not be out there. There have been gay members in the military that have had the proper training leading to successful military careers. The fact of their sexual orientation did not limit or hurt them while serving in the military. Like men, women have been serving their country with honor and pride for decades. But unlike men, the women in the military do not tend to receive as much recognition for their service to their country. Women may only make up fifteen percent of the military, but they have been excluded from twenty percent of the jobs in the military. â€Å"According to the Department of Defense, ending the ban will open up 237,000 positions to women. † (Hallman, 1) With the uplift of this ban, more opportunities will be opened for women not only in the types of jobs that they can have, but the rankings that they could possibly reach. Sexual assaults in the military towards women tend to go unreported. By allowing women to reach higher-rankings, there could be the possibility that sexual assaults go down or more likely to go reported. â€Å"Recent surveys of female veterans found that close to a third were victims of rape or assault while they were serving, which is double the rate in the civilian population. † (Hallman, 1) More often than not, sexual assaults go unreported in the military. By having women as higher-ranking officials, the sexual assault epidemic in the military may start being addressed properly. The proper steps in reporting sexual assaults may take place. There is always this fear that there will be severe repo cautions if women come forward. Women may feel a lot more comfortable reporting sexual assault to a women high-ranking official. Allowing women to fight in combat will be a positive movement that may even get rid or limit the negative aspect of the military. During war, soldiers encounter a variety of difficult tasks, mishaps and dangerous situations. All of these things are inevitable and are a part of war. Soldiers are put through situations that are not only physically but also mentally exhausting. Because of this a lot of soldiers develop PTSD or post traumatic stress disorder. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that’s triggered by a terrifying event. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares and severe anxiety, as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event. † (Mayo Clinic) From 2009, post-traumatic stress disorder diagnoses have increased in women from fifteen percent up to twenty-two percent. Men have increased from nine percent to fourteen percent in the diagnosis of PTSD. (Anderson, 1) This alone raises a lot of questions whether women are mentally stable enough to be on the front lines. Though it is true that women are being diagnosed at a much higher rate than men, there are probably a lot of men that are not willing to come forward and admit that they have post-traumatic stress disorder. Men in general tend to not want to come forward because of the fear that they will be looked as less of a man or less honorable. Women on the other hand are much more likely than men to come forward and because of this, the statistic may not be as accurate and be swayed. Women are traditionally viewed as these caring, emotional, and even soft individuals when compared to men. But realistically, in the military all of these characteristics of traditional women are dropped. It takes a certain kind of individual, man or woman, to join the military. The women that do decide to join the military are not like the traditional women. These women are tough, rigid individuals that are not much different to their male counterparts. The military lifestyle is a lot different than the civilian lifestyle. Yes it is true that women officially may not be allowed to fight on the frontlines, but that does not mean that women are not exposed to the same dangers as the men who are. USA Today States, â€Å"since the start of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, 292,000 women have served in those combat zones out of a total of almost 2. 5 million, Pentagon records show. In both wars, 152 women have died from combat or noncombat causes, records show, and 958 have been wounded in action. † Much like the men, some women that have served for their country have died. This just goes to show that even though women typically aren’t in the battlefield, the risk of them dying is significant. The military should be black and white not male or female. A lot of people are calling the uplifting of women fighting in combat an â€Å"experiment†. Is it really an experiment or just an official document that allows women to fight in combat? Women in the military are exposed to the same dangers as much as the men are. With the uplifting of this ban, men and women will now receive the same training essential for the front lines. Both men and women should receive this training in order to guarantee that both will be successful. If a soldier is not prepared mentally or physically, they should not be allowed to fight in combat. There should be rigorous testing on each individual soldier determining if they are combat ready. The sex of the soldier should not be the deciding factor whether or not someone is combat ready. There are plenty of men that are physically and mentally ready, but there is also plenty of women as well. As George and Lennie enter the ‘bunk house’, they immediately feel uncomfortable and hostile due to the extremely poor lack of hygiene and privacy of where they are expected to sleep while working on the ranch. This is shown when George finds an insect repellent in his bed, and asks Candy â€Å"What the hell kinda bed you giving us†. This shows the living conditions on the ranch, and Candy’s response insinuates that precautions such as keeping insect repellents were common. When Candy indicates to George and Lennie their beds, George feels insulted as to find his mattress is a â€Å"sack of straw†, in response to George’s outburst, Candy tries to make him feel comfort when mentioning the cleanliness of the ‘blacksmith’ that previously lived on that bed, and how he used to â€Å"wash his hands before and after meals†. By mentioning this, shows that this is an unordinary way to live in comparison to an everyday lifestyle of a guy on a ranch, in which this adds to the semantic field of poor hygiene. Steinbeck also presents George as an exception to the filthy ranch workers as he â€Å"made his bed up neatly with blankets†. Life on the ranch is presented as being very simple and basic as the ranch workers don’t have any luxury of any kind as they simply cannot afford it due to the fact they are ‘trapped’ in a cycle of poverty, where on the one hand they get paid for their work, and on the other hand, they have to pay the ranch owner for their substandard living quarters. They only have the very bare necessities so we see as George places on the apple crate for a shelf ‘his razor and a bar of soap, his comb and bottle of pills’. The life the workers live on the ranch consist of survival, which is why the workers use magazines etc. to read about people who have exquisite lives, trying to live in the hope of the American Dream. One of the major themes that Steinbeck presents in the novel consists of loneliness and despair, which is repeatedly shown throughout the chapter, in the motif ‘Solitaire’. This one player card game is very significant as it represents the personality, individuality and pessimistic behaviour of George and the other workers. They are close to company, yet they feel isolated as they don’t feel the need for a friendly relationship as they feel that they will be separated in future due to the lack of job security. We can view that racism is accepted and normalised by life on the ranch, we know this because the main character, George repeatedly uses the term ‘nigger’. Blacks were also treated very harshly in the early 1930’s in America as racial discrimination was not illegal and blacks were segregated from the whites, and were treated as second class citizens, therefore they were given lower wages than white workers and were commanded to do the dirtier jobs. An example of the harsh environment that black people had to live in is expressed in the story the old swamper told about a previous Christmas where they beat up a ‘nigger’ just for the fun of it. Also the disability and inequalities of people were also treated inhospitably on the life of the ranch. Steinbeck continually manifests the de-humanisation of Lennie and how he is rated below the standard of the ‘normal’ workers due to his mental illness.

Spin Drift essays I visited the Currier Gallery of Art and I truly enjoyed myself. I had never been to an Art Gallery and only had the impression that I had received through the movies. It was as I pictured it to be, and I would go their or another gallery again. The Currier Gallery had some outstanding pieces of art, they had everything thing from giant wall paintings to small wall paintings and giant sculptures to small sculptures. They even had a room dedicated to technology; they had the old models of vacuums, a boat motor, chairs, a jukebox, and much more. But out of all the big pictures, the bright colors, the big sculptures, and the big name artists such as Picasso and Monet, the one piece by Andrew Wyeth caught my eye. It was a smaller piece with little color that held so much meaning. Andrew Wyeth is an American, who was born in 1917. This piece is Tempera on Masonite. This piece was painted in 1950 and was named Spindrift. Spindrift had an old wooden rowboat that had been used and worn-in sitting on the beach with the waves flowing to about mid boat. The ocean was a grayish color flowing onto the dark sand. There was a bucket of silverfish sitting in the floor of the boat below the seat with a hole in it. An over used ore lye in the boat, while a small black colored bird flew just above the ground past the boat. In the side of the boat you could see the reflection of the waves. Even the frame had an old sense like the picture; it looked like it was made from driftwood or possibly old wood from a boat. When looking at the picture I had my thoughts about what did it mean and stand for. It reminded me of when I was younger and would go to the beach and Mr. Stuvola, an older man, would come home from fishing. The ability of the player to control and maneuver the situation made it more even exciting. Violent video game is one type of game that has been the most out popular among players. But with the increasing number of people engaging into these computer games, a number of issues have been raised: negative and positive effects of these violent video games to children and young adults. This essay will take the position that violent video games do have negative effects on children. One of the negative effects of these violent video games is the physiologic changes that happen while they are playing. The excitement brought about by these violent video games stimulates the sympathetic nervous system, thereby creating significant changes in the individual’s heart rate, respiration and other involuntary responses in the body. It is exciting and stressful at the same time, the stressful events could affect gastric stimulation and frequent adrenaline rush, and this adrenaline rush is what makes these players to feel â€Å"good† and makes them want to do it repeatedly. Sympathetic nervous stimulation promotes vasoconstriction, and this vasoconstricting effect is not good as it alters cardiac mechanism. Results indicated that college students who had played violent virtual reality game had a higher heart rate, reported more dizziness and nausea, and exhibited more aggressive thoughts in a posttest than those who had played a nonviolent game† (70-71). Similarly, these violent computer games could have a direct effect on children’s behavior, since they are vulnerable especially on their formative stage. Not everybody who plays these violent video games have good foundation of moral values and an intact well being. There are those who are easily persuaded and affected by what they see in their environment, especially those children that lack parental guidance, as well as those individuals who have a low self-esteem. These vulnerable individuals are more prone to be affected by what they play and see on video games. There is a great possibility that these supposed to be virtual thing could be played in reality. Moreover, another negative effect of these violent video games to children is that it teaches the kids wrong values for reinforcement of behaviors. In psychology, there is a thing called â€Å"positive reinforcement†. It is a way of reinforcing a â€Å"good deed† or behavior by rewarding a child if the child has done a good job in school or if they behaved well. On the other hand, computer games bestow rewards on the player after killing or defeating their opponent. This process is totally the opposite of what id thought in â€Å"positive reinforcement†, the act of killing is rewarded and the purpose of â€Å"positive reinforcement† is defeated, which in turn could affects the child’s perception of what act or behavior must be rewarded. And this reward system in violent video games could affect the child’s behavior by imitating those seen and done in violent computer video games. As mentioned in the Gentile’s book, â€Å"reward increa ses imitation† (136). Furthermore, the experiences felt by the individual, especially in violent video games or even in media violence could have a significant effect on a child’s interpersonal interaction. Unconsciously, a child could internalize what is happening on what they see. This type of violence is emotionally stressful and could alter interpersonal interactions. â€Å"Participation in violent video games cast a negative cloud over the children’s views of interpersonal interactions. One research revealed that preschoolers most likely experienced fear and anxiety when they saw bloodied victims and watched expressions of emotional distress in connection with the media’s constant showing of the events of September 11th and their aftermath† (Cantor, 2002). These experiences that are internalized by children, unconsciously affects their behavior, and when they are placed in situations similar to what they have seen, they could become anxious and restless. On the contrary, there are also sectors that would oppose as to the negative effect of violent video games. According to Doug Lowenstein, who is the president of the Interactive Software Association, people who do not understand the industry are prone in distorting the effects of video games on children. In fact, Lowenstein claims, violent video games cannot be shown as result in increased aggression of the part of the children (as cited in Anderson Bushman, 2001). But how can we expect them to see the negative effect of these violent video games, well in fact what they mean is purely business. Likewise, Steven Johnson said: â€Å"The most debased forms of mass diversion-video games and violent television dramas and juvenile sitcoms-turn out to be nutritional after all† (9). It is nutritional in the sense that learning comes along while playing these violent video games, such as mastery and control and hand-eye coordination. This paper totally disagrees with this notion. There are more appropriate ways of learning these things, without jeopardizing the minds of these children of what is good and what is wrong. Example are art camps, indoor and outdoor activities that utilizes the body, where in physical, psychological and emotional aspects are given importance, which builds friendship and the values of sportsmanship, as well as maintaining a healthy active body, which computer games don’t give. Furthermore, computer video games promote isolation, aggressive behavior and a sedentary life style by sitting long hours in front of these computers. In conclusion, violent video game has a strong correlation in children’s aggressive behavior. Violent video game has a great impact in children’s behavioral, emotional, physiological, and psychological well being.  Parents are the first line of defense against the invasion into children’s lives. The decision to buy or not to buy violent video games is a true freedom and should be taken seriously.
